Piet Hein Eek (Purmerend, 1967) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1990. His graduation project was a cabinet made out of scrap wood. In a time of lavishness, he chose to use a simple material and plain environment.
“The combination of an unusual choice of materials and equally unusual, but simple, production methods has become the theme of our work,” he says when discussing the cabinet.
Eek designs and builds furniture, lighting and accessories. His workshop and showroom are located in an old Phillips building in Eindhoven. This building also houses a shop, restaurant, and gallery. His other activities include interior design and architecture.
Eek has designed the “Made in the Workshop” furniture line for Lensvelt. The chairs, desk, and cabinet are characterized by the use of a basic frame of square, steel pipes.
