Gerrit Rietveld (Utrecht, 24th June 1888 – 25th June 1964) was a Dutch architect and furniture designer. ‘De Stijl’ was formed in 1917 by among others Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondriaan and Bart van der Leck. Gerrit Rietveld joined as member architect and furniture designer of this movement very soon.
In 1923 he painted his iconic armchair in the primary colors red and blue and soon thereafter he built his famous Schroder house. In the same period Rietveld designed a series of furniture pieces for the Catholic Military Home (Katholiek Militair Tehuis) in Utrecht, using bolts and nuts to connect wooden elements rather than the traditional wooden dowel pins. Robust, strong and notable due to the use of cross beams and contrasting colors.
Lensvelt is exclusive distributor of the Military Series by Gerrit Rietveld for the business market since 2017.
